Welcome to the Dune Special Edition Project

This is a project I have been slowly working on over the last few years with the goal of ultimately replacing many of the "outdated" special effects shots in David Lynch's 1984 version of Dune.
The project initially began as an endeavor to build a "proper" ornithopter - one with flapping wings, that neither the movie or the mini-series managed to achieve. However, with the advent of the "fan-edit" the scope of the project has expanded with the goal of updating the effects in all those places in the movie where I feel things could be significantly "improved."
Although I am currently working on this by Myself, it's a large undertaking and if there is anyone interested in helping this project along, feel free to contact Me - We might actually be able to get this project completed with a few more skilled and enthusiastic people!

Regards
Sasha Burrow

If you are curious about My professional work, I have been working as a VFX artist (Among other things) at The Asylum for the past 6 years, including visual effects on all 4 Sharknado films (Mainly stuff blowing up!).

Paul's Filmbook Lesson

Well, here is My 1st attempt at redoing the filmbook sequence.
Watch the full animation over at youtube HERE

I wasn't going to touch it until I realized that I had changed the look of the planets a bit so I had to redo those shots, and then one thing let to another and I have redone all the shots, sans the two close up text shots. I also enlarged the screen a bit on first shot where you see the film book - note - the control setup was way ahead of its time: Looks like it has 4 ipod style control wheels - Central button with outer ring.
There are still a whole host of things that need fixing and improving, but you get the idea of where I am going with this I hope!
There is also a deleted scene where Paul is sitting on a bed in a room on Arrakis (After the attempt on his life and shortly before he is drugged by Dr Yueh), where Paul is studying a filmbook. The scene starts rather abruptly and doesn't seem to quite "fit" into the other scenes, so I am considering doing a second filmbook sequence that would start that scene and impart the audience with further knowledge on the things they are about to encounter (The Fremen, the worms, desert survival etc).

  1. It really works. The carry-all and other things look a little more polished from when we last saw them, but the true shining point are the planets. They still look a little static without animated rotations, but it works well as filmbook. What I like most about it is that it really gives you an indication of what the finished work will look like. Can't get much better than this.

  2. I wouldn't recommend Paul reviewing about either the Fremen or too must of desert life. Remember, Paul is supposed to know their ways "as if born to them." If you having reading about the aforementioned, the viewer may think the filmbook gave him the way to deal with the Fremen unconsciously. Perhaps more information about the Landsraad (filling in information about the political intrigue) or explaining what Kynes' position (what a Planetary Ecologist is actually supposed to do.)
